The venue and surroundings

PCM16: Antwerp

PCM16: Antwerp

After the 2015 edition in London, the eighth yearly Pentaho Community Meeting will be back where it was in 2014: Antwerp, Belgium. The venue for this edition will be the gorgeous medieval hospital and monastery Elzenveld, located in the heart of downtown Antwerp. Elzenveld can be found at a short distance from the Groenplaats and the Handschoenmarkt, the Grote Markt and the Scheldekaaien.

When the hospital was build in 1233, canteens, dormitories, a chapel and cemetery, stables, barns and homes were added for resident pensionaries. The monastery building was enlarged and rebuilt many times in the course of centuries. The oldest parts date back to the sixteenth century.

If you want some distraction after all the technical talks, we recommend you to visit the vibrant city center of Antwerp.

From Beer center to fashion mecca, Antwerp has something for everyone.

If you would like to taste some famous Belgian beers, go to a small pub at the 'Grote Markt'. For a nice blonde beer order a Duvel, Tripel Karmeliet, La Chouffe or Leffe Blond. If you prefer an amber beer order a Kwak or a 'Bolleke'. If you go for a brown beer a Leffe Brown, Westmalle Brown or Westvleteren 12 (if you are very lucky) is a good choice.

As mentioned before take it easy though, these are not Amstel or Heineken, don't forget to eat something. What could be better than some traditional Belgian dishes to avoid embarrassing situations after too many of our delicious beers. You can't miss our famous fries, they are delicious combined with our national stew 'Stoofvlees', which has brown beer as its main ingredient.

If you're a huge fan of pastry, try to get a spot at our master chef Roger Van Damme's restaurant Het Gebaar, located around the corner of Elzenveld. Don't skip on the chocolates, Belgian chocolates are famous. Most delicious are the chocolates from chocolatier Dominique Persoone. His shop, the Chocolate Line is worth a visit, which showcases some spectacular chocolate art pieces.

For the ladies among us Antwerp is the fashion city of Flanders. There are a lot of lovely stores on the Meir, the Kammestraat and the Nationalestraat. For some inspiration, the Fashion Museum is located in the Nationalestraat with a lovely exhibition about Rik Wouters, a famous Belgian Painter and the dresses of Belgian Fashion house Nathan.

We hope you will have a lovely stay, feel free to ask us anything!
